Since the first shipped passed through the newly expanded Panama Canal in 2016, the Port of Charleston has launched a Charleston Harbor deepening project. To meet the new depth requirements for the largest container ships that call to the Port of Charleston, the harbor is being deepened to 52' which will allow all post-panamax ships to be served by Port of Charleston terminals 24-hours a day. The deepening project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021, giving the ability to serve the largest container ships to reach the East Coast.
